Sitting in a pub in London, live music playing and nary an empty seat to be found; I gave my hoarse throat a break from speaking and scanned the room.
My eyes caught upon a quote by Kaiser Wilhelm painted on the wall, “Give me a woman who loves beer and I will conquer the world”. For some reason, that evening, the part of my mind that enjoys being offended decided to rear its ugly head: “What’s that supposed to mean? Is he saying women are as unlikely to like beer as he is to take over the world? Is it really wise to be displaying such a quote right next to the bar?” I was ready to rage about this when a small voice in my head thought, “Maybe he meant it in a positive fashion, that a woman loving beer is a wonderful thing, but then why is he making such generalisations? And what’s wrong with not liking beer, anyway?” on and on it went.
I’ve since googled the quote and haven’t found the context in which it was said. Every once in a while I remember and the meaning behind the quote continues to evade me. It seems this will be another one of those minor issues that niggle at the back of my mind at random moments… Unless someone can clarify the matter for me 😉
